Coca-Cola has marketed its brand of happiness in a bottle for over a century, and the online extension of that is the 21st Century way. Coke's online experience sought to extend the popularity of its Happiness Factory campaign while focusing on the "physical uplift" found in every bottle of Coke-"that burst of joy, refreshment and energy you get with every sip," describes Sapient Interactive, the Palmetto Bay, Florida firm hired to create a story for the online audience. Sapient created a site that focused on the Factory's average yet indispensable worker responsible for bringing the Coke to the everyday vending machine. With high-definition video content and games fully rendered in 3D to create a visual experience on par with console games-plus unlockable downloads for virtual (screensavers and ringtones) and (iron-on shirt transfers and worker goggles) rewards-the site offered a look inside the machine and all the way back to the Happiness Factory.
"We wanted to push the limits of what could be done online and make the user experience more immersive, while keeping the site consistent," Sapient says. "The team worked with 3D animators and Psyop models from the original animation for the TV commercials, rather than just pulling clips, to reconstruct the experience online."
