West Virginia takes pride in its natural environment, right down to its nickname of the "Mountain State." EcoStructures, a Maidsville construction company, hired Eve Faulkes Design in nearby Morgantown to design directional signage that stands for its mission of building off-the-grid, custom-built, affordable homes. The resulting signs each keep two steel drum lids and a used tire out of the landfill- EcoStructures even uses recycled tires for some wall and floor surfaces-while the logo on the sign incorporates many of the client's green ideas.
"The inverted peace symbol represents the radiant heat water circulation through the house," Faulkes says. "The open wall of the cube stands for the south facing passive solar glass wall. The philosophy of the owner is summed up in the mantra, 'use it up, wear it out, make do or do without,' and the idea of making a tire 'do' as the carrier for the sign was too fun to pass up."
