Intestinal discomfort is no laughing matter, but San Francisco photograph Mel Lindstrom captured some of the best (and most humorous) expressions of it when doing a spec piece for a biomedical client who wanted to show just that. "When working with real people, the biggest challenge is always making them feel comfortable in front of the camera, but in this case it was especially challenging since we had to pull more out of them than just a nice smile," says Lindstrom of the portraits. "We had to get them to dig down deep and really come up with a great expression."
The shots, the "Before" in a "Before and After" juxtaposition, gave Lindstrom the opportunity to create some fun and unique images for the pitch, and allowed him to work on his "DZone" photographic technique, which emphasizes facial lines and colors. "This technique is a great way to show every facial flaw a person has, but still make a wonderful image," he says.
