Michael Albor of The Loft Salon and Spa in Boston wanted to showcase his hairstyling ability for a series of photos to be entered in a national competition, and to optimize his presentation he enlisted local photographer Bob Packert. The resulting images, embellished and turned into cards by Interrobang Design Collaborative in Richmond, Vermont, brought an unexpected whimsy to the competition in synch with the collection's name, Cirque du Quirk.
"Michael and Bob had developed the rough outline of a circus or carnival theme for the shoot before Bob contacted me to act as art director," says Interrobang's Mark Sylvester. "These culminated into a stylebook that was sent around to the overall creative team and used to brief the models and stylists on the day of the shoot. I had included typographic references as well to grease the wheels for the postcard project. As long as the hair looked good, we could do whatever we wanted within the theme. The broad range of props"-including a six-foot albino python and multiple parrots-"clothing, makeup and talent we had available kept the day fluid and productive." Cirque du Quirk's "cast of characters" reflected the goal of creating a collection of elegant, yet still accessible, hairstyles in a fun, non-mainstream medium.
